The third, fourth and fifth graders from the Coleman School's Girls on the Run team came up with the idea themselves for this year's community impact project.

Girls on the Run, an international organization, includes the project in its curriculum but leaves the specifics up to the individual teams.

Animals have long held a special place in the hearts of the girls on the Coleman team, which is why the girls felt raising money for pet oxygen masks would be the perfect way to show support for local firefighters and animals.

"This year's presentation brought things full circle for the girls," the team's coaches said in a joint statement.

"It was the first time they were able to meet the project's beneficiary, and as a team, we're thankful to the fire department for allowing us to be even more a part of the fabric of our community --specifically through our efforts this season."
